Got a Gift for Gab Consider these Positions that work to your Strengths as a Socializer As someone who loves talking and interacting with others, you probably arent wild over the idea of sitting behind a desk working quietly at a computer all day. And while talkers dont necessarily need to be constantly part of a conversation in order remain engaged in their jobs, positions with important social aspects tend to generate more success forsocializers since their can tap into their natural talents. As such, it is important for a talker to understand the social aspects of a job before pursuing it. There are a variety of positions to consider first when choosing a job (or career path) that rewards those with a love of talking. An abridged list of such fields include RECRUITER If you love talking to people about their daily jobs and career aspirations, consider the career of a recruiter. Recruiters dont necessarily need to be HR specialists in order to be successful at securing an employers talent. Natural relationship builders and talkers often make great recruiters. They also enjoy helping people land jobs and make good career choices.SALESItmay seem obvious to say, butgood talkers often make good salespeople. This is becausein order to make sales a salesperson must quickly develop a sense of trust and amicability with customers before jumping into a sales pitch. Continuing with the banter after a sale is another important part of a sales job so a love of socializing is a must.TEACHINGHigh energy and speaking skills are a pivotal aspect of being a good teacher, no matter the age of the students. Not only must they successfully convey information but also relate to their audience on a regular basis. News can be gathered and shared across a variety of media such as TV, radio, newspapers, and the Internet. Online news and media now has increased social exposure through the development of the social media channels as a major driver of audiences.MARKETINGIn marketing, talking skills are used not only to make effective sales pitches but also to develop existing commercial relationships and foster new ones. However, you also have a number of qualities that make you very hirable as a woman over 50. Here are some tips for standing out in this competitive job market Consider your schedule. Before applying to jobs, think carefully about your schedule, and how a job will fit into that schedule. Are you still raising children, or do you have other responsibilities that take up a lot of time? If so, consider looking for part-time jobs or freelance work. Think about how you will fit a job into your current life, and make sure to look for jobs with the right kind of schedule for you. This way, when an employer asks questions about your flexibility, you can answer honestly. Emphasize your experience. Women over 50 have so much experience they can draw on. If they have been previously employed, they have decades of work experience. Thi s work history is something younger workers simply do not have. Highlight your experience in your job materials and interviews. Highlight your skills. Make a list of all of the skills you have developed, both in the workplace and outside of work. Then, look at job listings in the fields you want. Circle any skills on your own list that fit the requirements of the job. Pay particular attention to transferable skills you have (such as communication or managerial skills) that will be useful in almost any job. Also, think about the skills and qualities you have as a result of your years of experience. Whether or not you have been in the labor force recently, you likely have qualities gained from experience that employers will want. For example, studies have shown that mature employees are particularly reliable, detail-oriented, and patient. They also have strong leadership skills. Once you have compiled your list, be sure to include some of these skills words on your resume and cover le tter, and in your interviews. This will show the hiring manager that you have the abilities it takes to get the job done well. Consider developing new skills. Think about any skills that will be necessary for the job, but that you either lack or have not used in a while. Take some time to develop these skills. For example, if many jobs in your field now require some experience with coding, consider taking a class. There are many free classes online for various skills, particularly in technology. If you want to start a brand new career, remember that you might need to go back to school. Think about your budget and your schedule, and make sure you can afford to complete the requirements for the positions you want. Network. Even though you likely already have a number of contacts in your field, you can always make more. Consider joining (or rejoining) a professional association in your field. Revamp your LinkedIn profile. Send a letter to your friend and family and let them know about your job search. Networking is an ideal way to make connections that could lead to a job. Follow your passion. Especially if you are beginning a second career, try to find a job that allows you to fulfill a lifelong passion. Perhaps you have always wanted to work with kids search for a job as a teacher. Maybe you have always had a woodworking hobby consider a job as a furniture finisher. Think carefully about what you want to do with this period of your life, and follow your passion Source Bureau of Labor Statistics

Build Your Personal Brand the NASCAR Way
Build Your Personal Brand the NASCAR Way Build Your Personal Brand the NASCAR Way Lessons in personal branding and marketing from NASCAR.While I was writing my book, â The Management 500: A High-Octane Formula for Business Success,â I attended my first NASCAR event, the 2008 LifeLock.com 400 at the Chicagoland Speedway, in Joliet, Ill. I was there to see what management and career lessons I could garner from one of the biggest phenomena in sports. The race began at 7 p.m., and I drove into the parking lot at 11 a.m.; it was eight hours before the action was scheduled to start. Or so I thought. A NASCAR event isnât a race; itâs an experience. If I had had even a small clue about how many management insights I would gain from studying auto racing, I would have written this book five years ago. Here are just a few things I learned:Add ValueA NASCAR race is so much more than just a car race. Itâs a Super Bowl level event. The race attracted 75,000 people, and I estimate there were at least 20,000 people tailgating at 11 a.m. I repeat, this was eight hours befo re the race started. Itâs a giant carnival, with actual old-fashioned barkers yelling out that they had free offers inside their tents. Itâs a giant concert with singers and entertainers on stage all day. Itâs a massive outdoor mall with over 100 booths selling caps, shirts, buttons, miniature cars, giant corn dogs and even lemonade.A NASCAR event attracts every conceivable brand-name product. I walked through the largest Abraham Lincoln museum Iâd ever been in, and it was on wheels. I even came across a display set up with dozens of the largest and most magnificent televisions I had ever seen. The race â" and the organization â" provided value beyond its product. What is the overall concept of the value you offer and how can you deliver that value to an employer in synergistic ways that can support each other?Personalize Your BrandThe strongest brands there were the race car drivers themselves. People of all ages wore shirts with the faces and numbers of their favorite driv ers. There was booth after booth of shirts, cups, cars and other take-home goodies with pictures of an individual driver and the number of their car on them. I bought two small replicas for both of my children of the MMâs car that Kyle Busch drives and a Toyota Racing T-shirt for myself. On top of all that, the drivers themselves appeared all over the place to meet with fans. These drivers are highly paid and are doing extremely intense and dangerous work for nearly three hours during the race. However, for several hours leading up to the race they are going around and saying hello to fans. Can you imagine a CEO who makes millions and millions of dollars a year going around to customers for several hours to talk with them right before an important board meeting? Thatâs essentially what these race car drivers do before every race. How can you make your brand more personal for employers and/or clients?Create an ExperienceThere are 43 drivers who compete at each NASCAR Sprint Cup Seri es race and there are 36 such races each year all over the U.S. This is a traveling circus that is bigger than any circus I had ever witnessed. And then thereâs the race itself. You havenât experienced loud until youâve heard a NASCAR race. If you havenât attended a race, then watching it on television doesnât demonstrate the speed well either. These cars were within a few inches of each other going at least 160 mph and jumping from high to low on the turns in the track. The whole day pulsated with lessons both on and off the track including: branding, innovation, teamwork, strategy, execution, planning, problem solving, winning, dealing with change, and preparation. It wasnât just a race; it was a 360-degree experience. I encourage you to read â One Helluva Ride â by Liz Clarke, which is about the history of NASCAR and also provides powerful thoughts on business momentum. Can you or your organization take your product and create a compelling experience around it?Make Your Own Pit RowOne of the highlights of the day was being allowed to spend 45 minutes walking up and down pit row a few hours before the race started. Pit row houses 43 pit stalls used to replace tires, refuel cars and fix any car problems. The actual race cars were sitting about 25 feet away from pit row itself while I walked up and down. This was branding heaven. A place where customers, corporations and racing teams all met in one spot. It created an extraordinary win-win-win situation. The racing teams provided additional value to the customers by letting them see up close where the cars went during the race. I saw hundreds of photos being taken where fans would sit with the crew members and get their pictures taken in the pit stalls. Every one of those pictures the fans took had corporate logos in them. That meant the sponsors would be seen thousands of times when those pictures were developed and shown with pride to family members and friends. These corporate sponsors werenâ t just hidden on the last page of a brochure. They were part of the fan interaction with the racing teams at the pit stalls. As I watched all of this, several questions popped into my mind. Can you imagine professional baseball or football players letting fans look in their lockers a few hours before the game and having their pictures taken standing in front of those lockers? Can you imagine corporate logos all over the lockers and the field itself? You might think that would ruin those games, and you might be right. However, think of the total cost of going to a major league baseball game or an NFL game. I canât afford to take my wife, Barb, and our children, Ben and Sarah, to very many ballgames. We have this thing called college tuition to pay for someday. The last time I went to a major league baseball game it cost me something like $225 for one night. Yikes. At the NASCAR event, the parking was free, the food was reasonable and the ticket prices were not exorbitant. How can you create a pit row in your business? Make a list of all of the types of customers you have. Now make a list of all of the companies that would like to sell to those customers. Could you create a unique event for your customers featuring your products and services? Could you then include other companies at that event as sponsors who would underwrite the cost of the event and benefit from being in front of your customers?Mind the Caution FlagsDuring the race there is one occurrence in the competition that has nothing to do with whatâs taking place right in front of the race car driver. Itâs called the caution flag. When debris lands on the track or a car gets damaged while racing, the caution flag is waved and all the drivers have to slow down and get behind the pace car. That doesnât seem too bad, except for the lead driver, who has to slow down and let all the other cars line up right behind him. The cushion suddenly evaporates. This same thing happens in business. Youâre doing a good job and staying focused. Youâve built tremendous momentum and you are well beyond the projected pace. Your organization is by far the best in the industry, and you continually generate significant, sustainable and profitable growth. Then suddenly the marketplace changes. Instantly all of the businesses in your industry slow way down. A series of national stories about your industry immediately sends even your most loyal customers searching for alternatives.Think of the housing downturn that occurred in 2007 and 2008. Suddenly the most successful and the least successful real estate agents were compressed into an incredibly tight market. The leaderâs lead was no longer what it had been. When there is even an isolated incident of mad cow disease, it sends restaurants and grocery stores into a temporary spiral, whether they were way ahead of their plan or way behind. This is why it is so important to focus on improving performance and not solely on your relative position comp ared to others at any given moment. Just because you had a great or terrible quarter doesnât mean youâre stuck in that position forever. Perhaps your competitor made a big sale right before the quarter ended, and you made one right after the next quarter started. It looks like youâre way behind when in reality youâre not. When your market gets compressed how will you be prepared to win the race in front of you?I encourage you to go to a NASCAR race, but get there way, way before it starts and let the lessons on management soak in.

How to Plan a VFR Cross Country Flight at Night
How to Plan a VFR Cross Country Flight at Night How to Plan a VFR Cross Country Flight at Night Planning a VFR cross-country flight during the day requires a certain amount of preflight planning and preparation. There are a few additional things about night flying that youll need to consider when planning a night cross-country flight. Lets review the daytime cross-country flight planning checklist, but this time with a focus on night operations: 1. Choose your Destination Choosing a destination at night is a bit different than during the day. First, youll want to make sure the airport is open, that the FBO or another facility is open if you need it, and that fuel is available at night, if necessary. Second, youll want to review the airport operations. Is the control tower open at night? Are there runway lights? Are the lights always on or is it a pilot-controlled lighting system? Are certain operations restricted at night, such as specific approaches, or takeoffs from certain runways? 2. Choose Your Route Navigating at night differs than during the day because your checkpoints will be different, and possibly your altitude. Instead of any old checkpoint, youll want to choose a well-lit checkpoint thats easy to see at night. A lake, for example, might be easy to spot during the day but will blend in with the dark terrain at nighttime. Instead, youll want to choose highways and highway intersections, cities or towns, or other airport beacons as checkpoints. Large, well-lit factories or stadiums work well, too. Youll also want to consider your altitude might differ at night. Keep in mind that hypoxia occurs at lower altitudes at night, so its recommended that oxygen is available above 5,000 feet MSL at night. But dont forget about terrain. You might actually want to fly at a higher altitude to ensure terrain clearance since its difficult to see terrain at night. 3. Get a Weather Briefing Your weather briefing will be mostly the same as during the day, but youll want to pay special attention to moving weather, such as frontal movements and thunderstorms. These systems are easier to see coming during the day but can sneak up on you at night. Pay close attention to the temperature-dew point spread for your area, as well. A close temperature-dew point spread can mean fog formation, and fog is known to form quickly. If the temperature-dew point spread is within a few degrees of each other, look for the trend. If its decreasing (getting closer together), you will likely see fog. If its increasing, you might be in the clear. 4. Choose an Altitude and Cruise Profile At night, your altitude and cruise profile may not change, but you might consider carrying extra fuel, which can mean extra weight and a change in cruise speed. Fuel management at night is more important than ever. 5. Compute Airspeed, Time and Distance The normal method of calculating airspeed, time, and distance should remain the same at night as during the day. 6. Familiarize Yourself With the Airport Especially important at night, airport familiarization will save you time and energy. Night operations at airports vary widely from airport to airport in comparison with daytime operations. Runways might not be usable at night, wildlife might be in the area, and FBOs might be closed, which means you may or may not be able to get fuel. Make sure you read the airport directory notes and call ahead if you need fuel or services. Sometimes special noise abatement procedures are in effect. And if its Class D airspace, youll need to know if the tower closes, and whether the lighting is pilot-controlled or not. Plan ahead and get familiar with the airport. 7. Double-Check Your Equipment During the day, there are certain day VFR items that the FAA requires you have on board the airplane. Its the same for night flying, but with more requirements. Make sure you have the items required by the FAA for night operation, which includes all of the daytime equipment plus extra fuses, a landing light, anti-collision light and position lights, and a source of electrical power. Also, make sure the aircrafts panel lights work, and to have a flashlight or two just in case. 8. Get an Updated Briefing If youve spent a few hours planning your flight, make sure you get an updated weather briefing before you depart. Weather changes quickly and its more difficult to see those changes at night. 9. File Your Flight Plan Filing a flight plan at night is the same as during the day. 10. Be Prepared for the Unexpected Think about a few unexpected events that might be more challenging to handle at night than during the day, such as a complete electrical failure, an engine fire, or an off-field landing. Consider how youll handle those emergencies differently than during the day, and plan for the unexpected. Have phone numbers of local FBOs or other pilots on hand in case you need assistance, and always bring food and water!

Well if you are currently on either coast, consider heading towards the middle of the country as Colorado and Utah took the top spots, while Idaho and Texas made it into the Top 10 as well: Colorado Utah Washington California Florida Oregon Idaho Texas Massachusetts Delaware For the first time this year, the rankings looked at âQuality of lifeâ which included drinking water quality, pollution, voter participation and community engagement.Utah, Colorado, Washington, and Massachusetts also all made it into the top 10 list for Best States Overall.Colorado and Utah growing in the tech sectorColorado taking the No. 1 slot is not a big surprise as its unemployment rate has been low for a while for the state with a population of 5.54 million. It is home to multiple booming industries including tech, agriculture, real estate, energy, tourism, craft beer, and everyoneâs new favorite, cannabis. The stateâs tech scene has become particularly relevant as the state employs hundreds of thousands of employees. Letâs also not forget that Googleâs new Boulder campus plans to hire thousands of people this year. Colorado also continues to be a hub for startups and Inc. even dubbed Boulder âAmericaâs Startup Capital.âSimilar to Colorado, Utah (population 3.05 million) is also seeing huge growth in the tech space. Nicknamed the âSilicon Slopes,â Utah is home to Overstock.com and Omniture. And because of the tech boom, there is also a strong, venture capitalist community present as well. It should also be noted that Utah came in at No. 3 for âOpportunityâ which took into account metrics including education, income inequality, and tools for economic success.

The two words that will lead you to success and happiness
The two words that will lead you to success and happiness The two words that will lead you to success and happiness Seriously: Just two words.Seems like this should be a very short post, right?Hereâs the quick and dirty: The word âyesâ leads to happiness. The word ânoâ leads to success. Hereâs why.For happiness say yesâYesâ creates opportunity. Saying yes a lot makes more things happen. And research shows that lots of little good things are the path to happiness. Spending money on many little pleasures beats rare big positives.Via The Myths of Happiness: What Should Make You Happy, but Doesnât, What Shouldnât Make You Happy, but Does:One researcher, for example, interviewed people of all income levels in the United Kingdom and found that those who frequently treated themselves to low-cost indulgences- picnics, extravagant cups of coffee, and treasured DVDs- were more satisfied with their lives. Other scientists have found that no-cost or low-cost activities can yield small boosts to happiness in the short term that cumulate, one step at a time, to produce a large impact on happiness in the long term.Saying yes to activities and events keeps you busy - and studies show youâre happier when youâre busy. The happiest people are those that are very busy but donât feel rushed:Who among us are the most happy? Newly published research suggests it is those fortunate folks who have little or no excess time, and yet seldom feel rushed. So say yes to things and stay active - especially socializing, which makes us happier than almost anything else.Having a better social life can be worth as much as an additional $131,232 a year in terms of life satisfaction. And research shows that making more opportunities - saying yes - actually makes you luckier.Hold on. I know what youâre thinking:If I say yes to everything that comes down the pike, wonât more bad things happen too?First off, Iâm not telling you to say yes to armed robbery or heroin. And studies show that as we get older we remember the good and forget the bad. So more stuff makes for happier memories. What about regrets? Yes, we all occasionally say yes to dumb things and later regret them. But what do you learn when you look at the things most people regret befo re they die?For the most part the old saw is true: we regret the things we didnât do more than the things we did.Want to be happier? Make âyesâ your default. For success say noâNoâ creates focus.I talked about this in my post about what the most successful people have in common. Warren Buffett once said:The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say ânoâ to almost everything. And thatâs what gives them the time to accomplish so much. The books Daily Rituals, Creativity and Managing With Power break down how great artists, scientists and businesspeople work. And all three say the same thing: Those at the top of their field work obsessively and relentlessly.Via Daily Rituals: How Artists WorkâSooner or later,â Pritchett writes, âthe great men turn out to be all alike. They never stop working. They never lose a minute. It is very depressing.âTrying to do too many things is the path to mediocrity.Want t o be an expert who has put 10,000 hours into perfecting their craft? First you need 10,000 hours. And that means saying no to a lot of other things.Via Talent Is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else:One factor, and only one factor, predicted how musically accomplished the students were, and that was how much they practiced.Glenn Frey of the Eagles learned exactly that about being a great musician. How did he learn it?By listening to Jackson Browneâs tea kettle - and with a lot of elbow grease:Success is about doing good work - and good work takes hours and hours.Want to be wildly successful? Make ânoâ your default.Great - but how do I become both?Saying yes to everything all the time will turn you into a very happy flake who never accomplishes much.Saying no to everything but your work will make you a miserable, lonely expert. So how do you say yes and no?It all starts with âprotected timeâ for your important work. Make a few of your prime hours inviolate. Anything threatening them gets a âno.â Period.Charlie Munger always kept one prime hour for his personal priorities.Via The Idea Hunter: How to Find the Best Ideas and Make them Happen:Charlie Munger hit upon one strategy when he was a young lawyer. He decided that whenever his legal work was not as intellectually stimulating as heâd like, âI would sell the best hour of the day to myself.â He would take otherwise billable time at the peak of his day and dedicate it to his own thinking and learning. âAnd only after improving my mind - only after Iâd used my best hour improving myself - would I sell my time to my professional clients.âFor the vast majority of people this means waking up long before your first outside commitments begin. My friend Cal Newport plans every minute of his day. Youâre not that much of a time management ninja? No problem.Focus on protected days instead of protected hours.Adam Grant has da ys where the door is closed, the answer is no, and important work gets done.Other days are designated for new initiatives, helping others, and the answer is yes, yes, yes.Thereâs a level of trial and error to see what works for you personally but this type of deliberate split is the first step to work/life balance.Sum upItâs pretty straightforward: For happiness: say âyesâ more. For success: say ânoâ more. And start experimenting with protected time to make sure both are getting their fair balance. Hereâs more on becoming successful and hereâs more on increasing your happiness.Putting this post together required quite a few noâs on my part - so for the rest of the day, Iâm a yes-man.Join over 320,000 readers. Interview Tips for Hiring Military Veterans
Interview Tips for Hiring Military Veterans Interview Tips for Hiring Military Veterans Interview Tips for Hiring Military Veterans Nielsen, Human Resources Director for Veterans United Home Loans Many members of the US Armed Forces are returning home to a progressively competitive civilian job market.Whats worse is the fact that these men and women are having difficulty translating broad military experiences into gainful employment. Most of these men and women have never applied for a job before. They went straight from high school or college and they went into the military, said former Marine Corps Captain and President of Hire Heroes USA, Brian Stann. So for them to play the unemployment game and translate their skill-sets effectively, it is very difficult for them. Stanns comments are directly on point. From M1A1 Abrams Tank Operators to Platoon Leaders, veterans are having difficulty translating their skills and are giving recruiters the added challenge of interpreting unfamiliar experience. When interviewing veterans and service members, take the following interview tips into consideration and youll discover a strong crop of top candidates. Uncover Qualities through Performance Based Interviews Interviewing a veteran is no different than interviewing a civilian candidate. The Department of Veterans Affairs even recommends using performance based interviews for applicants directly out of the service. This type of interview has been widely used for the past 30 years and focuses on what a person has done, instead of what they would do. As many recruiters know, the performance based interview does have its flaws. Most notably is the fact that an applicant with great presentation skills can secure strong consideration by conveying what the interviewer wants to hear over what is true, meaning they may or may not possess the skills relevant to the position. To avoid this, shift the focus from past behavior to verifiable experiences and achievements that matter most to the specific position. Basically, dont look at achievements, but the path that led them there. This may require some tailoring of normal interview questions to fit the applicant. How to Tailor your Interview Questions to Veteran Experience If you are interested in the veteran applicants ability to handle customer service, you will want to ask them interview questions that allow them to provide a complete answer: Tell me about a situation where you realized a person needed help. How did you realize the person needed assistance and what did you do? What was the outcome of this situation? Keep in mind that for many veterans, this could be their first job interview outside of the military. Thus asking them to provide a time they had to deal with an unruly customer may not yield an appropriate answer. Remember that the rules of combat and military service often differ from civilian life. Your job is to determine if the candidate youre interviewing can differentiate these situations. What Not to Ask in the Interview Process Beyond knowing what interview questions to ask, remember to keep the interview legal by not asking interview questions related to the candidates type of discharge, current military status and potential disabilities. Asking questions related to training, education and service experience is fine; however, unless you are a Federal agency or deal with Veteran Preference Points, you should never ask anything that requires the veteran to give their discharge status. Similarly, you should avoid questions pertaining to an applicants military status. Asking a National Guardsman if they will be deployed soon is similar to asking a woman if she is pregnant or planning to have children. Lastly, if you are interviewing a wounded warrior, refrain from asking questions that would require them to disclose any disabilities. It is perfectly fine, and encouraged, to ask an applicant if they have read the job description and can fulfill the minimum job requirements; however, questioning an applicant on their disability or trying to uncover PTSD or a traumatic brain injury is a direct violation of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act. Why Hire Veterans Hiring veterans isnt charity work. These men and women possess jobskills and qualities that dont just make them good employees, but some of the best employees. Over the course of my career, Ive had the pleasure of hiring well over a thousand qualified and sometimes not so qualified applicants. In many cases, these employees proved to be major contributors to the companys success; however, not every employee has been a seamless fit, emphasizing the importance of acquiring stand-out candidates. Im very pleased to say that of the veteran candidates hired, their military experience and its related qualities leadership, respect, teamwork, loyalty and the ability to produce results under pressure has made our company an even more united company with a common goal. As you consider your next group of new hires, dont discount our nations veterans. Dig deeper and ask questions that truly uncover values and qualities that can determine how well they mesh with your companys culture. Java Developers Do More Than Brew Up Code
Java Developers Do More Than Brew Up Code Java Developers Do More Than Brew Up Code Java developers are some of the hottest developers on the market right now. According to Nick Chlam, recruiting manager for Robert Half Technology, âJava is one of the most popular programming languages, and skilled Java developers are in constant demand.â As a result, there are many job openings available for Java developers. Like other software developers, Java developers are responsible for writing software such as desktop applications, websites and mobile apps. They also design and create engineering specifications for software programs and applications. Java developers work with quality assurance to develop software test plans and collaborate with hardware engineers to assess and test hardware and software interaction. They also implement specific development methodology and document software specifications. You can use the Robert Half Technology Salary Calculator to find salary information for developers specific to your city. What it takes to be a Java developer Qualifications to become a Java developer include: Programming skills in Java/Java Enterprise Edition and a database such as Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server Typically, a minimum of two to three years of programming experience Bachelorâs degree in computer science or a similar field, or a two-year degree and practical experience Good communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a development team Detail-oriented and excellent problem-solving and analytical skills For recent graduates and current students, Chlam has some specific suggestions: âIt is important to learn frameworks outside of core Java. The most common frameworks in demand are Spring MVC, Struts, Hibernate and Tapestry. You should also try to stay in touch with online development communities on GitHub or Stack Overflow. This will give your prospective employer the ability to see your work and to perceive you as someone who is passionate about development.â Being able to include these skills on your Java developer resume will significantly improve your visibility in the job market. Java developers at work A good Java developer is more than a technical resource working in isolation. In fact, Java developers are expected to work closely with the rest of the organization. Chlam says, âDevelopers need, now more than ever, excellent communication skills so they can work effectively with users and business executives. Technology runs business, and the two sides need to be in constant communication to ensure everything is running smoothly.â Like many other tech roles, Java developers must keep ahead of the learning curve to increase their value. âAlways learn something new. You have to stay in touch with the current trends in development if you want to stay ahead of the job market,â Chlam recommends. This post has been updated with more current information.

What Successful People Ask Themselves - The Muse
What Successful People Ask Themselves - The Muse What Successful People Ask Themselves Wouldnât it be fun to be an eccentric billionaire? Riding your unicorn, the wind in your yacht, giving away tons of money for the powers of good (and maybe spending some of it on yourself?). It could also be fun to be so successful that you have no major money or house worries, and every day you wake up to a job you love. Either way, success smells good, doesnât it? But how do you get there? You can read the interwebs and find all sorts of interesting information on what successful people do in the morning, or how they structure their day, or even- wink- the questions that they ask themselves. Why the focus on questions? Well, there are many schools of thought on this but if I can borrow from Appreciative Inquiry, one of the reasons that questions are so important is because âwords create worlds.â What that means is that the questions you choose to ask yourself have a direct impact on the world you create for yourself. For instance: Hating your job and spending most of your time asking: âUgh, how did I get here?â can lead to one type of action. A type that probably involves your couch, wine, and some potato chips. Or, you could ask instead: âWhat interesting job should I pursue next?â That question might create some brainstorming, good feelings, and- gasp- forward momentum. You see where Iâm going with this! So, what if we could change your career trajectory and make you more successful just by changing your questions? Interesting, right? Ready? Letâs do it! 1. What Does Success Mean to Just Me (and No One Else)? You know the worst game in the world? Comparing yourself to others (and then immediately feeling bad). Sometimes this game is called the âFacebook News Feed.â For many people, the knee-jerk reaction to this question is âmoneyâ or âpositionâ or something related to money or position. But think deeper- what does success truly mean to you? I played the âmore money, more promotionsâ type of success card when I was a consultant, and it didnât make me happy. I then played the âI need to be as successful as all of these other major players in my businessâ card when I became a career coach, and that also did not make me happy. What made me happy and much (much!) more successful in my coaching was to ignore everyone else and define it on my own terms. Ironically, of course, doing this lead to more money and a better position. Hereâs whatâs important: You are unique, wonderful, and special. What makes you happy and proud is different from what makes me happy and proud. So before we go any further, letâs start with that: What does success mean to you- and no one else? 2. Whatâs One Small Thing I Can Do to Get Closer to This Definition of Success, Today? You know what sucks? Running a marathon. Seriously, running for hours on end at the crack of dawn? That seems like the least amount of fun you can have standing up. But running a mile? Or two? And slowly easing into things? Now that sounds interesting. I could do that. You see where Iâm going with this example. Sure, you can say âIâm totally going to find my passion and change careers this week, yes!â and then immediately start to feel overwhelmed and lost. Or, you could say, âI want to find a job that fills me with excitement and energy. Iâm going to set aside an hour each week to do some research, read some books, and talk to people. Iâm not going to worry about getting to passion this second, Iâm just going to focus on making progress.â I think itâs so much easier to be happy when you see progress- and when you see progress, you are usually inclined to keep going, leading to more success. Itâs like a circle of awesome. So letâs focus on you: Whatâs one small thing you can do to get closer to this definition of success? 3. What Would the Best Version of Me Do in This Situation? Weâve all been in situations that are no fun. A bad boss, not getting promoted, not getting the interview or the job, or just feeling like a gigantic pile of failure. Sometimes, all you want to do is give up, hide, or scream in the bathroom. You arenât alone. But doing that doesnât make you happy, and it certainly doesnât make you successful. So, the next time you find yourself struggling with a person or situation, or paralyzed by your own career fears, take a deep breath and ask yourself: âWhat would the best version of me do in this situation? Seriously?â And then do that. Why? Because you are pretty smart- sometimes all you need is a reminder. 4. What Was the Good That Happened Today? Iâm not going to quote all of the science behind gratitude at you because Iâm sure youâve heard about it. Instead Iâll quote this from Richard Branson: âRight now Iâm just delighted to be alive and to have had a nice long bath.â Taking time to appreciate the small wins, the little pleasures, and the progress youâve made is important. Ben Franklin used to ask himself âWhat good have I done today?â- which is another form of the question that I really like. But either way, take a moment to enjoy what you are creating and accomplishing and doing in your life! Nothing breeds more success than remembering your success! Yes, these are big (big!) questions and theyâre a whole lot easier to skim, than to actually answer. But I can promise you that if you truly take the time to think about your response, you will end up happy and successful. Sometimes your career success starts with knowing what you actually want to be when you grow up. Need some help with that? Hereâs a fancy-pants free workbook designed to help you find work you love (with all the right questions!). Photo of happy person courtesy of Hoxton/Tom Merton/Getty Images.
