Back to the here and now, software developers need to be aware of coding trends in order to keep their skills current and realise opportunities on projects they are working on. Here we take a look at the top 10 emerging coding trends you need to know about: 1. React The explosion of social media platforms seems to have been the biggest single internet development over the past decade or so. Right in the engine room of the movement is the JavaScript library React, which is used for creating user interfaces on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. React is a coders firm favourite and knowledge of it could be essential in the majority of social media led projects. 2. Docker In the age of hybrid cloud and other infrastructures designed to streamline several systems, applications such as Docker could be called into action increasingly. Docker allows for the packing of software into one of its containers, allowing a user to view system tools, code and everything in between. Docker runs a partner programme which allows companies and specialists to upskill themselves and then tutor less advanced Docker users. 3. Grunt Grunt is a JavaScript task runner, which is able to save you from repeating tasks through an automated system, which also works with a number of plug-ins built for the platform. It cuts down on the coding time drain, and an impressive client list featuring the likes of Adobe and Twitter speaks volumes about its effectiveness. For any organisations in which development workflow is a priority, IT personnel may be required to have a working knowledge of Grunt. 4. Elasticsearch is an open source search engine developed in Java and based on Lucene, the open source software library. It essentially ties to Lucene and makes its features available through JSON and Java API. Among its users are Mozilla, Facebook and Soundcloud. Running on JVM, Scala is designed to improve your functionality across the board. Mid-level developers might not be specifically required to have Scala skills, but they should be prepared to learn them. 7. Apache Cassandra One of the key facets of Apache Cassandra is the lineal scalability which it provides, and the ability to replicate across multiple data centres makes it suitable for medium to large organisations. If you are using a number of commodity servers, Apache Cassandra provides robust support for clusters. Tableau Tableau is a programming language which combines function with logic if you are dealing with large amounts of data on a daily basis and wish to map it out more effectively, you can use Tableau to produce some attractive graphs and scatter charts. Tableau runs its own Data Analytics Learning Partnerships, as well as a classroom training programme, meaning all the resources are there for developers to upskill themselves. 9. RabbitMQ If you are looking for an effective message function for your data, RabbitMQ could be of interest. Released under the Mozilla public licence, it provides gateways for streaming text oriented messaging protocol, HTTP, and MQTT protocols. Its Shovel plug-in performs the tasks of replicating and sending messages from one broker to another. Meanwhile, the Management plug-in ensures the necessary monitoring and control over clusters. If a new role requires complex event processing or storage solutions, RabbitMQ could well be a requirement. 10. Twitter Bootstrap Compatible with all the major browsers, Twitter Bootstrap was originally Twitter Blueprint, and was created by employees at the social media network in order to improve its interface development. Twitter Bootstrap has now reached its fourth edition and is one of the most popular open source frameworks in the world. Organisations that are aiming for speedy and clean web development might make Twitter Bootstrap an essential for incoming developers. These are skills that employers will increasingly focussed on when assessing candidates in the hiring process. Unlike many other areas of IT, it is accepted that there is a large amount of self-learning for software developers. In the case of IT Contractors they are expected to bring current and relevant skills to an organisation without learning on that organisations time. So the best developers use a variety of tools, whether they be specialist websites, YouTube, Stackoverflow or GitHub to ensure that they have the skills to remain relevant. In next section of this blog on Talend Architecture lets take a look at few of its major products.Talend ProductsThe list of products includes licensed versions, open sourced versions, and platforms. Lets now see all these products one by one.Talend Enterprise ProductsTalend Open StudioTalend PlatformsAmong all these products Talend Open Studios are most commonly used. The reason being, it is open sourced which makes it free to download and use. It is the best tool to get you started and comes with almost all the functions you need to process your data. But in case you want to increase your productivity, collaboration and the return on investment you can go for the enterprise versions. As the name suggests, the enterprise products are best suited for the commercial purpose. However, the enterprise versions are not on our discussion list for today, so lets focus on the Open Studios and move ahead with this blog on Talend architecture. In the next section, I will try to explain the internal architecture of Talend Open Studio, which makes Talend so powerful yet user-friendly.Talend Open Studio ArchitectureBut, before I explain the internal working of TOS, let me quickly brief you about it.Talend Open Studio is based on Eclipse RCP which supports ETL oriented implementations. It is generally used for on-premises deployment and is extensively used for integration between operational systems, ETL processes and much more. Through its GUI, you can access metadata repository containing the definition and configurations for each process performed in Talend. As you might know, Talends GUI isextremely interactive and user-friendly and all you need to do is just drag, drop and link the components to perform a task. To execute these tasks, just click on the Run button present in the Run tab and the rest is handled by TOS itself. But have you ever wondered, what happens at the back end? Below diagram represents the basic Talend architecture which shows how Jobs are handled by TOS internally.Well, at the back end, the Jobs and the business models which we create on its GUI are stored in an XML format by the TOS.Now, whenever you execute these Jobs they will be converted into Java codes and the Business models will be converted into Perl codes by the code generator. Now that you have a basic understanding of how Talend Open Studio works, lets now take a look at the functional architecture of Talend.F unctionalTalend ArchitectureBecause of its functional architecture, Talend can easilyidentify various functions and then interact and respond to various needs of the IT market. Below is the functional architecture of Talend Open Studio:As you can see, the entire Talend architecture is divided into 3 functional blocks which are color coded (blue, green and orange). Lets see the functioning of each of these blocks one by one:Administration MonitorThis block is responsible for administrating and monitoring the Jobs. Here, you can find at least one Studio to carry out various data integration processes, irrespective of data volumes and process complexity. One thing, you must note is that you need a proper authorization to work on any project inTalend Studio.Administration and ManagementThis block contains a web-based Administration Center (i.e an application server) with two shared repositories. One of these is based on an SVN server while the second one on a database server. The Admini stration Center is responsible for the management and administration of all projects. The database server stores the Administration metadata like user accounts, access rights and project authorization whereas the SVN server stores the project metadata like Jobs, Business Models, Routines, Routes, Services etc. This makes the sharing of data easier between the end users.Execution DeploymentThis block is responsible for the execution and deployment of the Jobs. You can deploy one or more Job Serversinside your information system. These servers run the Jobs or the technical processes according to the scheduled time, date or event that is set in the Talend Administration Center Web application. Also, anend-user can easily transfer any Job to a remote execution server directly from a Studio, which is called the distant run in Talend. With this, we come to the end of this blog on Talend Architecture. The Ultimate Guide to Infographic Resumes
The Ultimate Guide to Infographic Resumes People love infographics because our brains are wired to respond to visual storytelling. Images grab our attention.A great infographic uses those images to tell a story and inspire you to share that story with others. The magic of infographics can even make your resume more engaging, which is just what you need to get noticed in a competitive job market.Remember: a resume is a marketing document designed to engage the hiring manager, get you the interview, and eventually land you the job.;/p:An infographic resume can help you get more positive attention, but only if you know what youâre doing.âAn infographic resume is a great way to stand out from the crowd,â says Lauren Ferrara, a creative recruiter for Creative Circle, a staffing firm that specializes in advertising and creative staffing. âRecruiters and hiring managers review hundreds of resumes on a daily basis and if you can find a way to differentiate yourself, you should take that opportunity.âClick thumbnailDo you ne ed an infographic resume or is this just another hyped-up trend? We talked to dozens of candidates, recruiters, and hiring managers about infographic resumes.Read on for our advice on using this job search and networking tool to your advantage. The Basics: What Is An Infographic Resume? What exactly do we mean by infographic? I like Techopediaâs definition:Infographic An infographic takes a large amount of information in text or numerical form and then condenses it into a combination of images and text, allowing viewers to quickly grasp the essential insights the data contains. â" Techopedia The last part of the definition is key. The goal of an infographic is not just to look cool â" it is to help viewers quickly engage with the material and understand the main points. The goal of a resume is also to engage the reader and tell your story quickly.Letâs face it: your resume will only have a few seconds to win over that busy hiring manager. However, in order to get results, an inf ographic resume must be designed well and used thoughtfully. There are pros and cons to using an infographic resume during your job search.Infographic Resumes: The ProsFirst, letâs take a look at some of the potential benefits of using an infographic resume:1. Stand out from the crowdLauren Ferrara at Creative Circle recruits for some of the top advertising agencies in the world. The competition for these jobs is fierce and she believes that a cleverly-designed infographic resume can get you the attention of the right people.Jobseeker Bryan Lovgren has also seen what an infographic resume can do. âIve had people tell me they almost hired me on the spot because of my creative resume,â says Lovgren, Digital Marketing Manager for Skyrocket Media. âI created it to inject more of my personality and make my experience more consumable by recruiters and hiring agencies.âClick thumbnail2. Demonstrate your creativity and talentâThe infographic resume is also a great way to show yo ur creativity, design sensibility, and personality,â says recruiter Lauren Ferrara. Her clients are looking for creative people and the infographic resume becomes another work sample. However, the infographic resume is not only for advertising creatives and graphic designers. A clever infographic resume can also demonstrate other strengths including your marketing and branding expertise, your writing skills, your presentation savvy, and/or your knowledge of social media trends. As Senior Director of Corporate Marketing at DocuSign, Gregor Perotto hires for marketing positions and believes that infographic resumes can help marketers stand out in a crowded field. I havent seen many infographic resumes come across my desk â" which is surprising. Perhaps marketers face the same challenge as the cobbler whose children have no shoes. They arent taking the time to sell their own skills because they are so focused on selling their companies products and services to others.âPerotto also practices what he preaches and uses an infographic resume as a networking tool. 3. Take control of telling your storyThe infographic resume is not just an opportunity to show off your cleverness. You should be using your cleverness to tell a compelling story about yourself. A picture is supposed to be worth a thousand words, right? Use the power of visuals to communicate whatâs special about you.âA digital resume gives you so much more freedom and creative flexibility to tell your story,â says Perotto of DocuSign. âYou can take your experiences and make them visually appealing and unique to you through graphics.âWith an infographic resume, youâre not constricted by the same format that everyone else is using. You can put the emphasis on the information that shows you are the best person for the job.4. Be a better networkerAn infographic resume can also be a very effective networking tool. Share it with a new contact and it becomes a conversation starter. Make it somethin g that people want to pass along. In fact, some professionals are opting to use infographics to create a cool online bio to use primarily for networking â" and sticking with something more traditional when formally submitting a resume. Todd Silverstein is the co-founder of Vizify, a company that helps people create graphical bios to present their personal brands online.âOriginally, we thought about using the Vizify technology to programmatize the infographic resume,â says Silverstein. However, after conducting research and testing with recruiters in late 2011, Silverstein and his team found that infographic resumes provided an edge only in creative fields such as marketing, advertising and design. Note: Read on in the Cons section for more about this finding.Click to seeOn the other hand, they found that a compelling visual bio had uses beyond the standard resume function. âWe were hearing that the graphical bio became really important after the sort down to 10 candidates who all looked good,â says Silverstein. The Vizify profile is really more of a networking tool, a way of presenting your personal brand online (though some Vizify members do use their bio as infographic resumes).Infographic Resumes: The Cons1. Not right for every industry/roleThe traditional resume has been THE way to do it for a long time. Hiring managers know how to quickly scan and categorize traditional resumes. Many are not interested in changing the way that they work.Meanwhile, some professions and companies are more conservative than others. To someone with a conservative perspective, an infographic resume can make the applicant look frivolous or downright wacky.âCreative industries and positions respond really well to infographic resumesâ"for example, communications, marketing, advertising, PR, etc.,â says Bryan Lovgren. âIndustries like finance dont respond as well. Theres an industry standard for what a resume should look like and what should be contained therein. Th ey want professional and professional to them is black and white with paragraphs meticulously edited to their standards.â2. A bad version makes a bad impressionItâs not easy to design a compelling infographic resume. If you canât do it well yourself, get some help or donât do it at all.âIf youre going to create a resume infographic, make sure its awesome. A weak attempt at being different is more damaging than a strong attempt at being mainstream,â says Lovgren.3. Not accepted for some job applicationsIf youâre applying online, you may be limited to a standard set of fields and formatting options. An infographic resume wonât work well in these situations. Youâll need a traditional resume to comply with some employersâ requirements. The bottom line: An infographic resume canât completely replace your traditional resume. You will still need a strong traditional resume for certain situations. The infographic resume just gives you another tool to use when the situat ion calls for something more creative.More Tips forInfographic Resumes That Stand Out (in a Good Way)Try a Combination Approach:âWhat Ive noticed through my network is that more and more marketing/adverting/sales professionals are creating hybrid resumes like mine. First part infographic, second part (work history) traditional. This seems to capture the attention of HR while allowing them to read through the resume like a traditional one.ââ" Anton Dobrosevic, senior marketing manager.Make It Visually Compelling:âTo create a compelling infographic, use as little text as possible, and instead make your points more visual. The information conveyed should be fresh, creative, and interesting, and the design must be clean and captivating unless youre an experienced designer, you may want to hire a professional to design your infographic.â â" Andrew Schrage, Head of Hiring at Money Crashers, the online financial publication.Keep It SimpleOne word of caution. Donât go over the top with the graphics! Your resume should still be succinct and easy to read. Lauren Ferrara, recruiter for Creative Circle.Infographic Resume FeaturesHere are some features commonly used in infographic resumes:Timeline â" Infographic resumes often use a visual timeline to show employment history, key achievements, and career milestones.Quotes/References â" You can feature testimonials and quotes from current and former managers, clients, or colleagues. You can also quote press mentions and other positive buzz about you. These are strong credibility builders.Photo â" People respond to photos. If youâve got a good one (professional and flattering and conveying the right image), use it.Headline/Tagline â" Use a headline format to summarize who you are. You can focus solely on the professional or add a bit of personality. An example from David P. Ingram (see below) uses: âI make the design and delivery of great software happen.âClick thumbnailPerottoâs says: âIâm a stor yteller. Comms strategist. Brand ambassador. World traveler.âStatistics â" Find a way to depict your strengths in numbers. Options include number of years of experience, number of successful projects, percentage of client satisfaction, etc.Click thumbnailLogos â" If youâve worked for top companies, display their logos. Employers respond to this kind of name dropping. You can support your own credibility with the credibility of well-known brands. You can also feature logos of media outlets that have featured you, organizations that have honored you, causes that you support, etc.Click thumbnailTag cloud â" Several people recommended the use of a tag cloud visual to represent skills, areas of expertise, personality qualities, and/or strengths.Infographic Resumes Made EasyEven if youâre not a design genius, you can still make a lovely infographic resume. There are a number of online tools that help non-designers quickly create their own infographics.1. Vizifyâ" Vizify allows y ou to transform your social media profiles/content into a graphical bio highlighting the best parts of your professional and personal story. Vizify can also instantly generate an âanimated portrait of your Twitter account.âVizify co-founder Todd Silversteinâs online bio2. Vizualize-meâ" Vizualize.me lets you automatically create a visual resume based on your LinkedIn information.Vizualize.me co-founder Hannah Weiâs visual resume3.
